Dan Gaudin is the second coming of Tom Glavine… Well, not really but last night it looked as if he would be a 300 game winner. Gaudin had no problems finding his spots as he painted corners and used his slider to keep the Twins batters out of sync. Once again the 2008 version of the Minnesota Twins looked off balance and were unable to hit anything that came there way. For each well hit ball there were two at-bats where the hitter was flailing at Gaudin’s slider. As a result the Twins grounded out 11 times including one double play in the first inning by Matt Tolbert.

Boof Bonser once again lacked control of his pitches. From the very start of the game he was struggling to get his fastball over the plate and as a result he ended up walking 4 batters while striking out just 2 in 6 innings pitched. He now falls to a 1-4 record on the season and while he didn’t have his best game he certainly kept the game within reach despite two of his four walked batters scoring.

The goat of last nights game goes to Craig Monroe. He struck out twice and failed to make something happen with two outs in the 7th inning. He came to the plate with 2 outs and runners on second and third. He flied out weakly to the shortstop to end the rally.

The Twins offense continues to sputter and the power that we all thought that they’d have remains to be seen. Tonight the Twins will attempt to come away with the series when they send Francisco Liriano to the mound. This will be Liriano’s 3rd start and he will once again work to remove the rust that has plagued him so far.

It’s about time… Last night Craig Monroe gave us a glimpse of what he has historically been able to do at the plate. Monroe had a very good night with 3 RBI including a double and a homerun. The season thus far has not been kind for Monroe. Prior to yesterday’s game he was batting a paltry .222 with 3 doubles, 3 RBI and 10 strikeouts.

After the game, Ron Gardenhire was asked about his decision to start Monroe in the lineup. He stated that Monroe had a career batting average of .667 versus Joe Blanton. While numbers can lie, sometimes batters pick up the ball batter against certain pitchers. Gardy’s statistical gamble paid off last night with Monroe leading the Twins to victory.

While Monroe seems to be heating up his bat after a slow start, the Twins have greatly improved this year while platooning Jason Kubel and Monroe at the DH spot. They have combined to hit 4 homeruns and knock in 18 RBI while hitting .276 in just 28 games. That is a great increase over their production from that position last year. They are on pace to hit 25 homeruns and around 115 RBI. While those RBI numbers are probably inflated, anything near these numbers would be a great improvement over last years squad. The DH position last year accounted for a .269 average with only 10 homeruns and 74 RBI.

The Twins are sitting with a 10-10 record and currently in second place in the AL Central. They trail the Chicago White Sox by 1.5 games and will look to extend their 3 game winning streak tonight against the Athletics. We will be sending Boof to the mound.

The Twins have an off day today… The Twins will need to cherish this day — their next day off will be in a week when the Twins finish a 6 game road trip that includes the Oakland Athletics and the Texas Rangers.

Given the Twins current 9-10 record, Twins faithful can be fairly optimistic during these next 6 games. For the most part this season, our ballclub has navigated its way through what would typically be considered a tough schedule. If the Twins would have found a way not to blow those two games last week against the Tigers, their record would be 11-8. That would be VERY respectable considering that they had played the Angels, White Sox, Tigers and Indians. Three of those four teams will have a strong shot of making a playoff push this fall.

The next 6 games are winnable for the better than expected Twins. If the Twins can take both of these series, they could end their road trip with a 15-9 record which would be MUCH better than most of the talking (blogging) heads would have thought.

The first month of this season has been very interesting. A few thoughts on the progress thus far:

1. Starting Pitching - This has been much better than I would have anticipated. Livan Hernandez has shown that he does have something left in the tank and Scott Baker has been reliable. The biggest surprise has been the emergence of Nick Blackburn. He has been very sharp in his first 4 starts. While his record doesn’t seem special, he has lowered his ERA to 2.49 runs/game. He now leads the Twins in this category.

2. Power? We don’t need no stinkin’ power! - Only 9 homeruns…. If Harris wouldn’t have hit one yesterday, the only guys who sniffed a four bagger have been named Morneau and Kubel…

Delmon Young? Where you at!
Craig Monroe? Where you at!
Joe Mauer? Enough with the singles…Where you at!

Eventually we’ll need some help from the long ball if we’re to be successful. It’s very hard to manufacture more than a couple runs a game by playing small ball all the time. Someone step up and get the big hit.

3. Go-Go-Gomez - Who thought that you could go on a bunting “slump”. Gomez started out the season on fire. He was changing games with his speed and bunting ability. During the last two weeks however he has been HORRIBLE in that part of the game. He appears too eager to start running down the first base line and as a result is stabbing at the baseball. I’m waiting for Gardy, or Joe Vavra to get through to him that he doesn’t need to rush his bunts. He’s the fastest man in baseball and as long as he gets it past the pitcher he will be successful in his bunt attempts. Nothing is more deflating to see a guy not do the fundamentals when that is all he needs to do to be successful.

4. Utility players - Tolbert and Harris have been great. It seems as if they are always on base and causing issues. They both have that ability to be like David Eckstein used to be… Always finding a way to piss of the opposing team.

Overall i’m optimistic. I know that our chances to win the division or make the playoffs are slim to none but thus far the Twins have been entertaining and if we’re really building for 2010, I like what I see.

It’s a cool and clowdy day in Minneapolis. This afternoon i’ll be making my trek across downtown to the Metrodome. I chose to attend todays game for a few reasons:
#1 - DQ Hat Day… The first 20,000 fans will be getting one of these:

They typically are not great hats but I kind of dig the old skool retro look. Hopefully I’ll be one of the lucky fans!

#2 I really want to see Nick Blackburn pitch. Everything that I have seen so far from him has been impressive. Although his record (0-1) does not reflect his dominance he has shown that he can compete at the big league level. He has pitched 17 2/3 innings while striking out 11 and walking 3. His ERA prior to todays game is 3.57 which ranks second on the team to Livan Hernandez who has a 3-0 record and a 3.00 ERA.
Hopefully Blackburn can out duel Jarrod Washburn of the Indians. The Twins have had a rough start the season while only winning 4 of their last 10 games (which they are currently riding a 2 game losing streak). With the sudden resurgence of the Detroit Tigers, a loss today puts the Twins at risk of owning the cellar of the American League Central.

This afternoon the Twins announced that Fransisco Lirano will start the season pitching for the Class A Fort Myers Miracle. In my opinion, this is a good move by the front office for several reasons.

1. He’s rusty. Lirano has shown some signs of regaining the form that he had in 2006 but for the most part he is missing his velocity and his slider. As a pitcher, he needs to learn to trust his surgically repaired ligaments and feel comfortable throwing his fastball at 100%. His slider is a different issue. Control over breaking balls is very difficult. He has shown this spring that he does not have the control over the slider that was the most devistating in the game. His sliders are largely up in the zone and look more like a slow curve instead of having the dramatic breaking motion that it once had. Spending time dominating Class A hitters will help him get important innings as well as get a feel for his pitches again.

2. Confidence. Liriano has always been a confident pitcher however with his coming back from Tommy John surgery he will need to continue to maintain the confidence that he had in 2006. If he can work on his pitches and start to dominate the minors then Gardy will not have a hard decision to bring him up to the big show.

3. Experience for other players. The last thing the Twins want is to demote a pitcher who has pitched well in favor of someone who will sell Jerseys or tickets. The Twins need to win in order for the fan base to be interested. The residents of the upper mid-west are typically very bandwagon prone and if the Twins fall far out of the running early it will have an effect on the financial success this season. Put someone in a position where they may win. If that is Liriano fine, but if its not then let Liriano make his starts for the Miracle and lets have someone like Blackburn pitching.
All in all, I think that this is a good move several reasons. I’m glad that they announced it today so that he can make a start prior to the regular season starting for the Miracle

Ron Gardenhire announced this week that Carlos Gomez would be the opening day center fielder for the Twins by sending Denard Span and Jason Pridie to the Minor League spring training complex. At first glance it seems that Gardy has lost his mind. It has been written over and over that Gomez has the “tools” and that he was the centerpiece for the Santana trade but did he really beat out Span or Pridie?

Here is what I found on their performance thus far in Spring Training:

Gomez: 54ab/12r/15h/1hr/6rbi/26tb/10k/10sb/.293obp/.481slg/.278avg

Span: 39ab/6r/11h/0hr/2rbi/15tb/5k/3sb/.404/.385slg /.282avg

A few things stuck out from their spring training stats.

The first is slugging percentage. Gomez has a much greater upside in this category. When he does hit, he hits the ball for extra bases. He doesn’t get a high percentage of singles. He doesn’t have a ton of power however his speed allows him to easily get doubles and an even more exciting is his ability to get the triple. In 15 hits he has taken third twice.

The second area that Gomez appears to have an advantage is in runs scored. While Gomez does have more atbats, he score many many more runs. So far this spring, Gomez is scoring at an amazing clip. He’s been on base 17 times this spring and he’s scored 12 of those times. Wow!

Not all of the stats go in favor of Gomez. He does have a downside in that he doesn’t get on base all that often. With guys like Mauer, Morneau and Cuddy batting behind him you would think that these guys will drive in runs. Span is getting on base at a very high percentage. He does this by primarily by working the count. He has walked 7 times this spring. This however is where stats become funny…. He has been on base 1 more time than Gomez (even with Gomez having a 15 atbat advantage) but has scored 6 less times. There certainly is some variability in what causes players to score runs but when Gomez doubles Span’s run production it makes me think that there is something more to this than chance.

The next statistical advantage goes towards Gomez. His RBI production has been decent considering his lack of hits. He has 6 RBI to Span’s 2. Gomez seems to thrive when men are on base or in scoring position.

The last statistic that really matters is pretty much a dead heat. Span has a batting average of .282 with Gomez batting .278.

With these stats favoring Gomez, its no wonder why Gardy decided to take a calculated risk in starting Gomez. With a on-base machine in Mauer likely batting in the #2 hole, it is likely that any ball through the infield will result in a run (as long as Gomez is on base). The bottom line is this: Gomez will mature with atbats. He has the upside and while his strikeout to walk ratio is horrible, I believe that there will be many road games thsi year where our starting pitcher will be handed the ball with runs on the board. That in itself will help the Twins out in a division where we need all the help we can get.

It appears that there is at least 1 Devil Rays player who is happy that Delmon Young is gone.

Carl Crawford.

This week during an interview he was asked about Delmon Young. Carl stated that he is sick of Delmon’s constant yapping and that he should “Shut up and play baseball”. He then went on to say that he would be glad to say that “to his [Delmon’s] face”. The reporters quickly relayed that information to Fort Myers where the Twins are holding spring training. Delmon failed to repspond.

Here’s the link: http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/40931

So this is what i’m wondering…. Why is Carl Crawford (and possibly more Devil Rays) so irritated with Delmon? We all know that he caused issues with the Rays but as of yet I have not heard one negative thing about his in the Twins camp. I’m hoping that his past doesn’t rear its ugly head!

All I know is that i’ll be watching with anticipation on April 16th when the Twins square off against the Rays. It could be a smackdown that I would NOT want to miss!

Have a great week everyone… I’m off to Mexico for a week. See you on March 21st!

During my morning search for Twins related content, I found this interesting video on the StarTribune website. In a nutshell its an interview with Jerry White and each of the three centerfield candidates – Carlos Gomez, Denard Span and Jason Pridie.

Check out the link here: http://www.startribune.com/video/16538031.html

Since the trade that sent Johan Santana to the Mets, I have had the notion that Carlos Gomez was the heir apparent in the storied history of Twins centerfielders…. Puckett….Hunter…..Gomez.

I will admit that I have not spent much time doing any research on the candidates but I took it for face value that Gomez MUST be the guy.

So….its finally research time. I’ll start with Gomez

Carlos Gomez — Age 22

Last year Gomez spent a short stint with the Mets. He played in 58 games and had a less than impressive line. He batted .232 with an on base percentage of just .288. His most impressive ability is his ability to steal bases. He is touted as being the “fasted man in baseball” however his inability to get on base (which is fueled by his horrible strikeout to walk ratio - 27:8) puts a damper on the only attribute that he seems to offer right now. Assuming that Gomez improves his OPS, he could easily get 25 stolen bases without tying his cleats. Gardenhire seems to like his speed and continues to work him out at the first spot in the batting order. He is in love with his speed and believes that he can be very valuable if he could just learn to bunt and hit the ball into the ground. The biggest question is whether or not he can actually do that. He’s very raw and he might have the tools to help the club out but with every triple he gets we might have to deal with him striking out with the bases loaded.

Denard Span — Age 24

Denard has been in the Twins organization for 5 years. He has been a top 10 Twins prospect since his arrival to the organization back in 2003. Scouts love his defensive abilities and his speed. Many in the organization however have been down on his lack of progression and now many consider him to be a “bust”. Denard has never spent time on the Twins squad and to date has had no major league atbats. Denard was left off the squad during the September callups last year due to his ineffectiveness at the AAA level. Gardenhire has currently been splitting time between Span and Gomez and the split-squad games during spring training this year.

Jason Pridie — Age 25

Jason might be the most polished of the three candidates. He has been playing professional baseball for 5 years and has had the most success at the minor league level. Like Denard Span, Jason has never had a major league at-bat. The concensus of most media/baseball people is that Pridie is the long shot to make the group. This has nothing to do with his abilities but more of the “flash” of Gomez and the tenure of Span with the Twins organization. That being said, Gardy tends to lean towards guys like Pridie…..The hard working guy who will do the little things right. Pridie possesses speed, is an excellent bunter and uses the whole field during his at-bats. If the other two candidates falter or don’t give Gardy what he is looking for, he just may be the dark horse of the group. I have heard some people talk of him as if he’s a “younger, faster” version of Aaron Rowand. His power seems to be developing and his power numbers and on base percentage increased substantially last year when he was with Durham of the International League.

Ultimately, Gardy will have a tough decision to make on who to keep and who should take the 300 yard walk across the parking lot to the Twins minor league complex. So far, it has been a race and it appears that each player has something unique to bring to the Twins.

Believe it or not, yesterday was a big day for the Minnesota Twins. No, the Twins did not make top story on ESPN by trading their ace Johan Santana. The Twins made a small move that I believe will help them (at least offensively) next season. Yesterday was the final day to either sign or release former Cubs and Tigers outfielder Craig Monroe. The key to this deal was that the Twins needed Craig to take a pay cut from the salary that he was making last year with the Cubbies.

Monroe agreed to a one year deal worth 3.82 million. You can read more about it here.

This is was a good move for the Twins for several reasons. The first is that the Twins now have 4 outfielders vying for 3 spots. While this might not sound all that good, think of the positives. We’re pretty certain that newly acquired outfielder Delmon Young will be playing Left Field (or possibly center — due to his good range and laser rocket arm). Cuddy has been cemented in right field. Left field will likely be platooned by both Monroe and Kubel. Both Kubel and Monroe have had their ups and downs. Monroe was unstoppable in 2006 but had a miserable time of it in 2007. Kubel has shown flashes of brilliance but then has also looked much like the coal that i’ll be receiving for Christmas. With those two guys platooning Left field that will leave one to play DH while the other is in the field. Both will get a bunch of at-bats and this will effectively remove us from the days of Jason Tyner or Lew Ford acting as our DH.

Some naysayers will poo-poo the idea that Monroe will be able to contribute. They will point to his last seasons numbers where he batted .219 with 12 homeruns and a mere 59 RBIs. Maybe i’m not expecting too much out of our DH position but I’d be tickled pink with 12 homeruns from that position. If we can get a glimpse of Monroe in the 2006 season I think that we might be happy to have him on our roster.

First of all, let me get something off of my chest. I hate the fact that a deal hasn’t already been struck. At first, the hoopla and anticipation surrounding Santana to [insert large market team here] was fun and it was fun to check to look for updates to Loony Lavelle’s or J.Christiansen’s Trib blogs for updates. That time has officially passed and as time drags on, it looks as if the anticipation (or lack there of) will be my cross bare.
Since I am a true Twins fan (so much so that I have my own blog), I feel that I must keep up to date with this. So what have we learned from last week?
· The Yankees are “pulling” out of the Santana sweepstakes because they would not pony up Melky Cabrera, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy in one package for the Santana.
· The Red Sox (who in my opinion) were only in the running to bid the Yankees up have now stepped up. They want to offer some combination of Coco Crisp, Lester/Ellsbury, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson and Babe Ruth to the deal.
· The Mets aren’t interested in a trade if they have to give up Jose Reyes or David Wright.
· Hank Steinbrenner apparently has all the bad qualities of his father…..but none of the good ones. He’s been accused of tampering and general dishonesty by the media and the baseball community. Major League Baseball will only investigate him for tampering, since Lying : Baseball :: Fireworks : 4 of July
· New Twins GM, Billy “not to be confused with Beane” Smith is taking the hard-line on Santana. He’s more than willing to hold on to his pitcher and let him walk away next year to the highest bidder.
A few of my own personal observations:
· Don’t trust anyone with the last name Steinbrenner. He comes from a long lineage of people who refuse to come in second. Everyone knows, including Hank, that if the Sox get Santana they will be in the World Series every year from now until 2012. With a lineup that starts with Santana, Beckett, Dice-K and Shilling they will not be beat. When Hank said that the Yankees are out of the race that is a bold face lie. They are trying to see what the Sox offer so that they can possibly swoop in at the last moment.
· Many people who are loyal to the Twins are ripping the potential deal for Santana by saying that “He’s the best pitcher in baseball” in conjunction with “The current deal on the table is not enough”. I would suggest that this is flawed logic for several reasons. First off, the Twins will NOT be a playoff team with Santana next year. The Twins can not afford Santana’s contract demands. With those two things being as they are the Twins NEED to unload Santana before he hits the free agent market. When every owner in baseball is aware of these factors, the Twins have no leverage in making the monster deal. Sure they have the goods but to be honest, the Yankees and Sox will be just fine without Santana. They were good last year and they’ll again be good.
· The trade haters also point to the fact that the trade is horrible if it includes CoCo. I disagree. There are several reasons for this. First off, his salary is favorable for the Twins. We could keep him for a few years and then either resign or let him go. Hopefully by then we could develop or trade for a young center fielder. The haters also would prefer Ellsbury over Lester. There are many who spew their opinions stating that Lester is no better than a 3 or 4 pitcher. They are dying for Ellsbury but I know that this is only the case because they saw what he did in the World Series. What they fail to remember is that the only reason that he was able to play towards the end of the season last year was due to a Crisp injury that kept him out of the lineup for some time.
· We will not be able to evaluate any trade properly for several years. Those who are adamant against this trade would likely not be happy with any realistic trade because of the emotional attachment that they hold for Santana.
Who knows when we’ll find out what the future will hold for Santana. Until then, I’m going to take some Advil. This trade can not come soon enough.
